Later, he wrote that for a few minutes, reaching for those verses, he forgot who and where he was. Poetry didn't save him. But it insisted he was still a man who could think.
The essays herein sit with the moral aftermath of the Holocaust — the philosophy, the film, the memory, the modern Jewish thought that had to reckon with what human beings proved capable of. Some of it looks at the witness of the victims; some of it looks, harder, at the ordinary people who did the killing and went home to dinner. I came to this through formal study, but I stay in it for reasons study can't exhaust.
