The Metanarrative • acrylic on canvas • 2005
Jean-François Lyotard defined the postmodern as incredulity toward metanarratives, the grand stories that hold every smaller story in orbit, and here one burns at the center of the canvas while everything around it turns in a scraped, dark spiral that could be falling in or flying apart. The angel of truth flies out, moving left to right.
The painting was a gift to my philosophical mentor, Dr. Bruce B. Janz.
