Tiananmen Square, 1989 • acrylic, wax, and gold leaf on canvas board • 1997
The two large characters at the upper left read juéshí, hunger strike, the protest students began in the square on 13 May 1989, three weeks before the tanks came on the night of 3 to 4 June. The surface is built up in wax and gold leaf and then darkened, so what glows in it glows the way embers do, from underneath.
This was made for a friend who lost comrades at Tiananmen.
